Despite Canada’s commitment to being a global leader in Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEVs) combined with government rebate programs to incentivize these purchases, consumers are telling us they are not quite there yet. Our ongoing electric vehicle (EV) research – the latest study conducted with Canadians shopping gotrader.ca in February of this year – has shown a downward trend in consumer interest in this vehicle type. Let’s deep dive the results to better understand why Canadians are pumping the brakes when it comes to EVs.

Consumer Interest in EVs Hits a Roadblock

With our EV research demonstrating a drop-off in EV purchase interest by Canadian car shoppers over the past few years, it should come as no surprise that automakers have also witnessed a similar outcome with moving EVs at the retail level, particularly in the back half of 2023 and into 2024. In our most recent study examining interest and intent for this vehicle type, 46% of non-EV owners have expressed interest in buying EVs, which is down from 56% in 2023 and 68% in 2022. On the flipside, EV ownership has slightly increased to 12%, however, representing a mere 2% uptick from 2023.

Reasons_For_Buying_An_Electric_Vehicle

Factors that Supercharge Interest in EVs

The foremost reasons consumers cite as influencers to purchase an EV remain comparable to what we observed last year. Ninety percent of EV intenders state fuel cost savings, which is up from 84% last year. Following this comes environmental friendliness at 62%, low maintenance cost at 48% and technological advancements at 38%. We recommend playing up these advantages of EVs when fielding pitches with prospects who may benefit from some soft encouragement into purchasing an EV.

To gain a better understanding of how your dealership can support consumers who may be on the fence about EVs, the answer lies in the factors that deter consideration and purchase. Our study revealed that 79% of consumers who are not open to buying EVs stated limited range as a drawback, 72% are dissuaded by lack of charging station availability, 68% cite higher purchase cost, 59% believe they aren’t suitable for cold weather and 55% are concerned with prolonged charge times. Educating your shoppers to combat widely held anxieties with range and charging station availability can help you land them in one of your available EVs.

EV Prices Experience a Shock

Examining EV price trends, our latest GoTrader Price Index has observed a 17.9% decrease in new EV prices and a similar phenomenon on the pre-owned side, with a 10% decline – a characteristic result or waning levels of demand. Traditionally, the average price difference between like-for-like ICE and EV models is roughly 20%, with EVs on the higher end, however, with new and used EV prices retreating, we may soon witness this margin decrease.

Reasons_For_Not_Considering_Buying_Electric_Vehicles
Hybrid_Interest_Is_On_The_Rise

Hybrid Popularity Growing at a Faster Pace

Our research shows a significant lift in EV intenders’ interest in hybrid (HEV) vehicles, perhaps a cogent middle ground to ease the leap from ICE to ZEV. Last year, slightly more than half of prospective EV buyers, 52%, said that they would be interested in a hybrid vehicle, whereas our latest study shows a 10-point jump in HEV interest, to 62%. Similarly, we’re seeing growth in plug-in hybrids (PHEV) interest, moving from 54% in 2023 to 60% this year. The flexibility that hybrids offer may be more compelling for non-EV owners and a better option for you to recommend to those who may not be ready to commit to a fully electric vehicle.

Toyota Leads the Market in Brand Consideration

When asked which brand consumers would consider buying for an EV, Toyota comes out on top at 55%, consistent with last year’s top ranking. Tesla (41%), Hyundai (36%), Honda (31%), and Kia (31%), round out the top five list. Compared to last year’s results, interest in Toyota, Honda and Kia have increased, while Chevrolet has slipped out of the top five rankings.

ZEV Mandate Doesn’t Sway Consumer Decision-Making

When taking into account the federal governments 2035 ZEV mandate for all new light-duty vehicles sold in Canada to be zero-emission, 78% of those surveyed were aware of it but only one-in-three said this would influence them to purchase a ZEV for their next vehicle. A similar number of respondents, 75%, believe that Canada will not meet the 2035 target. Some of the key aspects cited by those who think meeting the mandate target is unlikely are: 70% see gaps in infrastructure, 60% believe a change in political leadership could result in a revocation or alteration to the mandate, 55% feel the mandate may spur consumer adoptions of ZEVs, and 44% believe manufacturers won’t be able to produce enough new ZEVs to meet the demand.

10-Year EV Outlook

Even with government incentives to encourage EV purchases, Canadian consumers are less certain of growth in EV sales and infrastructure over the next 10 years. While 73% of EV intenders surveyed in 2023 believed that EV sales and infrastructure will rapidly grow in the next 10 years, this percentage has dropped to 63% in our latest study. When asked if they agree that over half of vehicles on the road will be EVs in 10 years, only 39% agree with this statement, a 10-point drop when compared to 2023 results.

Key Takeaways

  • Consumer interest in EVs has declined, despite government incentives and mandates
  • Understanding the pros and cons of EV ownership can inform your promotional and sales strategy for this vehicle type, and aid in formulating an educational strategy for undecided shoppers
  • Interest in hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles has increased, presenting an opportunity to ease the leap from traditional gas-powered vehicles to EVs
  • EV outlook over a 10-year term has dipped since 2023, with less prospective EV buyers believing there will be a significant ramp-up in critical infrastructure to support the transition

Despite most automakers now offering electric vehicles (EVs) and governments rolling out plans to mandate the sale of EVs, consumer research shows that car shopper interest in EVs is still strong, but it appears to be softening. If you’re a dealership looking to attract buyers and increase your EV sales, we recommend a shift in the focus of your efforts to educating customers about the advantages of EVs, while also addressing the perceived issues that may be turning them away from this segment.

Electric Vehicle Purchase Consideration

Once a very rare sight on Canadian roads, EVs have become common enough that no one really looks twice at them. Almost all Canadians have also seen a public charging station and realize that home charging stations are available. Those commonalities aside, many consumers can still have questions about the differences between hybrids and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and may have misconceptions or outdated information about battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). Dealers who aim to increase EV sales need to be proactive in educating their customers about electrified vehicles, by addressing the issues that lead some to turn away from them – either in person when customers come in, or by making the information immediately accessible on the dealership website.

Our survey found that of non-EV owners who demonstrate no inclinations to purchase electrified, 76% cited range limitations, while 68% flagged purchase cost as an issue, and 65% raised concerns with charging station availability. Range is an understandable concern, but many consumers rely on outdated information, from a time when EVs were much less efficient. In official ratings from Natural Resources Canada, almost all 2023 model-year EVs have a minimum rated range of 330 km, and several exceed the 400 or 500 km mark. For many drivers, this is more than suitable for everyday commuter use, especially if they are considering it as a second car alongside an internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle. Dealers can work with prospective buyers to see if an EV’s range will work for what they need it do. Public charging infrastructure gaps can still be an issue, but speaking to the availability and benefits of home charging may in fact be the hook to land the business.

Reasons for Not Considering to Buy an EV
Reasons for Considering to buy an EV

Among those who would consider an EV, 84% said it was due to fuel cost savings and efficiency, 58% for environmental friendliness, and 50% cited an EV’s lower maintenance burden. Although the vehicle’s price is a concern for many, buyers may not be aware of available rebates, including the federal incentive. It’s also important to juxtapose the fuel and maintenance savings against an EV’s upfront cost.

Dealers should also consider emphasizing other benefits, such as long battery warranties, resale value, and in some jurisdictions, preferred parking or HOV lane use. The more your customers know about EVs, the better your chances of having them plug in – pun intended!

Tesla Vehicle Consideration

Key Takeaways

  • Educate consumers and prospective buyers on the different types of EVs available in the market
  • Ensure your customers understand their charging station options, including the availability and benefits of at-home charging
  • Outline cost, maintenance and environmental benefits when owning an EV
  • Share the latest range per charge, based on current market offerings

The broad economic impact of the ongoing global pandemic notwithstanding, electric vehicles (EV) have captured the spotlight in the global automotive marketplace, with auto manufacturers introducing new models in all EV categories, from pure battery-powered electric vehicles (BEV) to hybrids, at a frenzied pace. Government incentive programs and media hype are also major forces continuing to drive consumer curiosity and awareness in the category.

But just how far does Canadian consumer interest in EVs actually extend to purchase intent and what are the factors ultimately influencing an EV purchase decision?

To shed some light on these questions, we conducted a national online study with gotrader.ca and AutoHebdo.net marketplace users this spring to uncover insights on Canadian consumer perceptions of EVs, specifically, what motivates their interest and informs their decision-making in purchasing an EV. More than 700 people across Canada responded to the survey.

Among the key findings of the study, we found that while 92% of respondents do not currently own an EV, nearly two-thirds (64%) of non-owners said they were at least open to the possibility of buying an EV as their next car instead of a traditional gas-powered vehicle. This represents a great opportunity for Canadian car dealers with EVs in their line-up.

With virtually constant presence in the media spotlight, it’s perhaps not all that surprising that Tesla was the brand most often named by potential EV buyers in our survey as coming to mind without any prompting. In fact, Tesla is by far the most popular electric vehicle manufacturer currently in market, with a full two-thirds of car shoppers claiming it to be their most desired EV brand. Lagging far behind in second place is Toyota, with 8% of respondents identifying it as their most desired EV brand. After Tesla’s virtually untouchable 77% rate of unaided brand awareness, Toyota came in at a solid 32%, followed by Chevrolet, Ford and Nissan, at 18%, 17% and 15% respectively.

Of course, despite the generally positive attitude Canadians have towards EVs, there is still plenty of room for sales growth for traditional automotive brands in the segment and opportunities for dealers to encourage and motivate buyers to take the EV plunge.

One of the key areas to consider is just why some consumers are not interested in buying an EV, at all.

According to our survey, the top three objections buyers have about EVs are a higher purchase price and limited travel range, both coming in at 61%, as well as a lack of charging stations or power availability (54%). Other objections include concerns about maintenance cost, lack of suitability for cold weather, and – perhaps counter-intuitively – detrimental environmental impact because of battery manufacturing and disposal requirements.

Among potential EV buyers, fuel cost efficiency is the top reason they would consider such a purchase (83%), followed by perceiving EVs to be environmentally friendly (70%), and requiring less maintenance than pure internal-combustion vehicles (51%).

Interestingly, while 79% of potential buyers say government incentives could motivate them to purchase an EV, a full 30% of survey respondents said the minimum financial incentive that would sway them to sign a purchase agreement is more than $10,000. Another 28% of respondents said it would take at least $6,000 to convince them to buy an EV – still higher than the federal government’s current $5,000 maximum incentive.

So, what does this all mean for dealers eager to take advantage of high consumer interest in EVs and aiming to gain a competitive advantage in the marketplace?

Clearly, dealers need to develop marketing strategies to leverage the perceived positive attributes EVs have among consumers. However, it’s just as important to address barriers and consumer objections in the marketing messaging.

Seeking to identify the key factors that can motivate an EV purchase among prospective consumers, our survey found that potential buyers overwhelmingly want to know ahead of any purchase just how they are going to be able to charge their EV at home and on the road, and exactly how far they can travel in between charges.

Another key factor that may be hindering EV sales across the board is a general level of confusion and lack of awareness among consumers about the differences between battery-powered electric vehicles (BEV), hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), with only 37% of car shoppers indicating they are clear on the distinctions.

Thus, dealers looking to develop promotions and marketing collateral to increase sales of EVs should think about how they can creatively integrate elements that educate consumers about the different types of EVs available in the marketplace and help dispel many of the myths and misconceptions that still surround EVs, particularly with regard to vehicle performance and maintenance costs.

According to our survey, online video, third-party review websites, and manufacturer websites are the top information sources potential buyers use to learn more about EVs, with dealerships down the list and tied with friends and family as the preferred EV information source for 27% of respondents.

Clearly, then, there is plenty of opportunity for dealerships to do more to educate, inform and motivate buyers to put a charge into their EV sales!
