ARC: How is the Canadian auto business most different than when you first started out?

The Canadian automotive business has changed significantly since I started in the industry almost eight years ago primarily due to the changes we have seen in technology. I started at gotrader.ca the same year we began transitioning our dealers to online only solutions and away from magazines. Since then, the industry has completely embraced the technological advancements and has pivoted to adapt to the changing behaviours of the automotive consumer.

ARC: What are the biggest challenges facing the Canadian car business today, and conversely, where do you see the biggest opportunities for the Canadian car business?

I think one of the biggest challenges to the automotive industry today is the change in behaviour of Canadian car buyers. The consumer attitude towards purchasing a vehicle/owning a vehicle has changed drastically in the last 10 years. Younger generations are less interested in owning a vehicle due to the availability that they have to public transit and ride sharing businesses. There will always be a need for vehicles but there is significant opportunity for the automotive industry to embrace the new areas of the industry such as ride sharing.

ARC: At almost any workplace, problems or challenging situations will inevitably pop up. How do you as a leader handle those situations?

I handle the challenges head on. Pushing challenges away or running from any problem will lead to even more challenges in the future. I work with a great team at gotrader.ca and I rely heavily on my team when I come up against a challenge that I don’t think I can face alone. I am a true believer that collaboration is the key to a successful team.

ARC: What is a leadership/management tactic you employ that is unique or might surprise people?

I strive to lead by example as a leader every day because I believe you can’t expect people to change without first changing yourself. I do my best to be a positive model within my organization to encourage others to do the same. However, as a leader it is important to understand what makes your team tick. Some leadership tactics work with some people while others are not as receptive to the same tactics. Understanding your team and learning from your past experiences is extremely important as a leader.

ARC: We at Auto Remarketing Canada, of course, are big proponents of reading. What is a book you have read that has influenced or helped your career?

On an average day I spend at least three hours behind the wheel driving to customer meetings. A few years ago I discovered that the best use of this time, was to listen to audio books that I would otherwise normally read. I have been able to “read” so many more books this way and I believe it has absolutely influenced my professional and personal life. A book that I read recently that has helped shape my career is “The Myth of the Nice Girl” by Fran Hauser. I have been told several times in my career that I am “too nice” and was often considered a push over. For years I thought I would need to change my attitude completely in order to succeed and reach my goals. This booked helped me understand that as a leader I can still be nice and be a successful leader. In fact, through Fran’s book I have learned how to take this “nice girl” trait and use it to accelerate my career and become and even better leader.

When you receive a promotion and get nominated to a prestigious industry award in a matter of a few months, you’re guaranteed to garner some attention. This was the case for Matt Lawson, former Senior Sales Manager of Ontario Dealer Groups at TRADER Corporation, who recently moved up the ranks to assume the position of Director of Sales, National Dealer Groups. Matt, who has been a TRADER employee since 2005, was selected to lead all Canada-wide sales and customer relations for the company’s Dealer Group channel of customers.

“I’m proud and honoured to announce Matt Lawson as the new Director of Sales for TRADER’s Dealer Group Channel. This is a huge step in Matt’s career, and he is well deserving of this promotion,” says Jeff Woolcock, VP of Sales at TRADER Corporation. He goes on to say, “Since the beginning of his career at TRADER I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him grow and take on a true leadership role in the organization. He has made a positive and lasting impression in the new ways we look to better serve our customers, and I can’t wait to see what his innovative thinking will bring to this new role.”

Matt was also recently nominated to Auto Remarketing Canada’s 2016 Class of Remarketing’s Under 40. The award looks to recognize individuals under 40 for their outstanding contribution to the remarketing industry. Winners were selected based on votes submitted by fellow industry peers and colleagues.

Matt Lawson, gotrader.ca

I had the opportunity to sit down with Matt, to find out first hand, what his journey has been like thus far, and what he envisions for the future of TRADER and the remarketing industry.

CF: How did you get started at TRADER?

ML: I started with TRADER in September 2005. I was fresh out of post-secondary and at that time gotrader.ca had just started to publish multi-photos for car dealers. The TRADER marketplace was rapidly gaining traction online and TRADER was setting out to help all dealers across Canada capture their entire inventory for the digital marketplace. As such, our Digital Lot Capture team (at that time, not so digital) was staffing up to prepare for the dealer support demand.

CF: What are you most excited about in this new role?

ML: I have been working exclusively with Dealer Groups since 2013. I have grown up in the car business (grandfather was a car dealer for 40 years, dad owns a body shop and still works in that retail operation today). It is very interesting to see the different retail operations and dealer group dynamics across Canada. It allows me to deeply understand where different dealers or groups can create efficiencies in their day-to-day operations.

CF: Where do you see TRADER going?

ML: The digital landscape has progressed at lightning speed over the past 3-5 years and I don’t see that slowing down anytime soon. The thing that most excites me about TRADER is that our agile innovation/development strategy enables us to be nimble and move fast. Our mission at TRADER is to help buyers connect with sellers; quickly, easily and confidently. I think we have managed to deliver on the first two of those fairly well and we are now highly focused on the third piece ‘confidence’. Automotive consumers in today’s market with today’s market conditions have a growing need for transparency from sellers while in the process of selecting their next vehicle for purchase. I think TRADER is well positioned to help both buyers and sellers connect on that premise and facilitate the transaction more seamlessly using online tools.

CF: Where do you think the automotive industry is going? What do you think are the exciting things coming down the pipe that will change the way consumers shop or the way dealers manage their business?

ML: As I mentioned, there are and will continue to be many changes in the digital landscape that enables both efficiency and confidence for buyers and sellers. I think we will see technology continue to develop and evolve, and that will continue to change that very complicated concept we know as the ‘consumer journey’. I think we will continue to see technology companies such as Google, Apple and Microsoft look at ways to both partner, in or disrupt, the automotive retail industry. And lastly, that really well known San Francisco start-up we know as Uber is going to continue to evolve and create a changing competitive landscape for both OEMs and Retailers across North-America and the Globe.

Rural Dealer Wins Top Prize in Canada

Today, TRADER Corporation announced the winner of the 2015 Driven to Perform Contest. The contest, which debuted for the first time early last year, aimed to recognize the top performing dealer in Canada. The inaugural winner was selected based on key performance metrics using the vAuto inventory management solution, including: turn rate, average days in inventory, cost to market and price to market.

“We are excited to announce Craig Dunn Motor City from Portage LaPrairie, MB as the winner of the 2015 Driven to Perform Contest. When we compared their performance prior to using vAuto to where they are today, it’s really quite impressive to see the growth transition and efficiencies the product has created,” says Robert Rath, Vice President of Business Development at TRADER.

vAuto is the only inventory management solution on the market that integrates live local market data powered by gotrader.ca. With over 8,500 dealerships subscribing to vAuto in North America, the solution offers unique tools to help dealers make better and faster sourcing, appraising and pricing decisions.

“I was surprised by the results [of vAuto], it’s absolutely the only reason I can remain competitive outside of major metro [Winnipeg], especially in today’s economy where there may be less consumer demand,” says Tyler Dunn, Sales Manager of Craig Dunn Motor City. The dealership, part of the Murray Group of dealerships, has been a vAuto subscriber for over 3 years and is located 100 kilometers outside of Winnipeg. »

vAuto Driven to Perform Contest Winner

The dealership recognized their biggest challenge prior to using vAuto was the high cost of advertising inventory to attract customers outside of their local market. Management knew they needed to find more efficient ways to attract these customers in order to decrease their average days in inventory and increase their turn rates.

“We needed a way to attract customers without spending thousands of dollars marketing every single unit. vAuto helped us realize that the only way to do this was to not only source the right vehicles that are in demand in our market, but to find the perfect price to market those vehicles right off the bat, even if it meant pricing our inventory lower than market average,” says Dunn. He admits that while it did take some time to get buy in from his team, vAuto has made a huge impact on his dealership performance, bringing in more and more customers from surrounding areas.

He adds, “Since using vAuto, we’ve improved our volume and gross per unit every year, the sales guys are happy, the customers are happy, and we continue to sell more cars.”

TRADER recently kicked off the second annual Driven to Perform Contest and invites all qualified dealerships to participate. *The winning dealership will receive their current vAuto subscription free for 2017! For more information and to sign up please click here.
