The GoTrader Awards celebrate automotive excellence and recognize the best vehicles in over 30 segments, instilling trust and confidence in Canadian car shoppers

TORONTO, ON – February 16, 2023 — Winners for the 2023 GoTrader Awards have been announced today, revealing the best vehicles in Canada according to some of the country’s foremost automotive experts.

“As Canada’s leading and most trusted automotive marketplace, the GoTrader Awards are yet another way we empower Canadians in their car buying journey,” says Jodi Lai, AutoTrader’s Editor-in-Chief. “These winners represent vehicles that go above and beyond to raise the bar so Canadians can feel more confident the next time they’re buying a car.”

The GoTrader Awards are considered the most trusted automotive awards in Canada, based on findings from 2022 Ipsos research conducted with car owners nationwide.* The study found that fifty-two per cent of vehicle owners in Canada say they would trust the GoTrader Awards, which was the highest percentage when compared to other automotive awards programs.*

A total of 31 category winners were named in AutoTrader’s most robust awards season yet. Some of the most prominent categories are Best Overall Car, SUV, and Truck, with the Genesis G80/Electrified G80, Subaru Outback, and Ford Maverick respectively winning across each of these segments. The Ford F-150 Lightning was recognized as Best Overall Green Car. Toyota earned the honour of being named Canada’s Most Trusted Car Brand for 2023, according to a survey of Canadian consumers.**

The expert jury of more than 20 automotive journalists from across the country vote on the best vehicles in each segment that they feel confident recommending to their own family and friends. When voting, the judges consider a dozen different criteria, including value, innovation, safety, driver satisfaction, and overall excellence. Every vehicle that’s available for Canadians to purchase is eligible for an award, but each winner offers something special that takes it to the next level.

“We are thrilled to announce the most prestigious and comprehensive automotive vehicle awards in Canada for the fifth consecutive year,” says Ian MacDonald, Chief Marketing Officer at TRADER. “It has always been our mission to help Canadian car buyers, from coast-to-cost, shop with confidence using gotrader.ca. With consumers recognizing our GoTrader Awards program as the most trusted awards, this validates that we are helping car shoppers make the most informed purchase decisions, while offering support to our dealer partners and OEMs that sell these award-winning vehicles.”

The GoTrader Awards also outrank other automotive award programs in terms of influencing vehicle purchase consideration. Fifty-nine per cent of vehicle owners say they would be more likely to consider purchasing a vehicle that was awarded best-in-class by AutoTrader,* which bolsters the confidence and trust consumers have in OEMs and dealerships who carry vehicles recognized across each of the categories.

Our latest GoTrader Price Index tells a story of two sides of the same coin. For new cars, price increases are sustained by a ramp up in consumer demand as supply falls short of the mark. In contrast, used car prices have softened – a month-over-month trend that first became evident in June of this year. The decline in used vehicle prices appears to be driven by an increase in inventory availability as well as global economic uncertainty. An analysis of inventory levels on gotrader.ca shows a 24% lift in used vehicle marketplace listings compared to the same time period last year. Although used vehicle demand remains strong, the market is softening compared to the peak, which lasted from mid-2020 to the first half of 2022.

Mix of Luxury and Mainstay Vehicles Remain on AutoTrader’s Top Searched Vehicles of 2022, While Interest in Economical Options Rises

With over 11 million Canadians visiting gotrader.ca to browse hundreds of thousands of vehicles for sale each month, GoTrader mines and analyzes its search data each year to capture the pulse of Canadian car buyers’ interests and provide insights into their most coveted car selections.

Data released from AutoTrader, reveals a nuanced view on car shopper preferences in 2022, underscored by surging consumer demand, residual impacts from the global microchip shortage, and record high fuel prices. While luxury and mainstay car brands remained top favourites for Canadians, more economical options also gained in popularity. The tried-and-true Honda Civic soared four spots to the second most searched vehicle, while the Toyota Corolla and Camry rose several spots on the Top 20. AutoTrader’s 2022 Top Searched vehicle list saw the Ford F-150 hold strong as Canada’s most sought-after vehicle for the eighth year in a row, while searches for BMW M cars were bumped off the list in favour of an SUV, the Jeep Wrangler.

  1. Ford F-150
  2. Honda Civic
  3. BMW 3 Series
  4. Ford Mustang
  5. Mercedes-Benz C-Class
  6. Porsche 911
  7. Toyota RAV4
  8. Mercedes-Benz E-Class
  9. Chevrolet Corvette
  10. Jeep Wrangler

With cost of living and gas prices on the rise in 2022, Canadian consumers appear to be giving extra thought to their car purchases. This year, the most significant shift on the Top 10 Most Searched list was the Honda Civic, jumping from sixth place to second. Additionally, the budget-friendly Toyota Corolla rose considerably in search interest, rising eight spots (#23 to #15) since 2021, and making its way to the Top 20 list nationally for the first time since 2019 and replacing other vehicles to rank in the Top 10 in Quebec and Atlantic Canada. Such shifts suggest that some Canadians are indeed searching for more economical options, and cars as a category still remain popular.

Provincial Search Breakout

2022 Provincial Search Data Revealed Key Regional Preferences for Car Shoppers Across the Country.

British Columbia Edges Away from Luxury

This year the Honda Civic earned a spot in the province’s Top 10 most searched vehicles list, knocking the BMW M from the list, signifying a continued shift away from luxury vehicles for British Columbia. In 2021, the more economical Toyota RAV4 (#4) replaced the luxury BMW X5. Whereas in 2020, British Columbia had the most luxury vehicles in the country compared to any other region at six vehicles – in 2022 this was down to just four. As for top honours, the Ford F-150 held strong at #1.

SUVs Gain Popularity in Alberta

Larger vehicles continued to command attention in Alberta. Comprising half, the top searched list were four SUVs, one more than last year, and a truck. The Toyota Tacoma, 4Runner and Chevrolet Corvette were knocked off the list, and the BMW X5 (#8), Honda Civic (#9) and Toyota Highlander (#10), became new additions for Albertans.

Trucks Hold Strong in Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan stayed true to its roots, again outpacing every other province in the sheer number of trucks on its Top 10. The Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, and Toyota Tacoma held on as category favourites. Adding to the province’s year-over-year record of having no luxury vehicles on the list, the Honda Civic (#3) made a new appearance, reinforcing Saskatchewan’s penchant for practicality.

Cars Remain King in Ontario as Province Shifts to more Economic Models

Cars continued to dominate in Ontario, taking up 80 per cent of the region’s Top 10. This year, Ontarians were seeking more economical options, with one less luxury model making the cut, and the Honda Civic rising to top spot all the way from fifth last year. In 2022, the Honda Accord (#10) also replaced searches for BMW M vehicles.

gotrader.ca Top Searched Vehicles of 2022

Honda Civic Takes Back Title in Quebec

2022 marked the first place return of the perennial favourite Honda Civic, reclaiming the top spot from the Porsche 911 – the surprise favourite of 2021. The Porsche 911 didn’t fall far behind (#2), creating an interesting mix of luxury and economical. The Toyota Corolla (#8) was a new addition, bumping the Jeep Cherokee from the Top 10.

SUVs Overtake Cars in Manitoba

SUVs gained traction in Manitoba this year, accounting for 60 per cent of the Top 10 list and making it the province with the highest interest in this category. The 2022 addition of the Toyota Highlander (#9) in place of the Chevrolet Corvette pushed cars as a category to a close second.

Maritimes Move Away from Upsizing

Atlantic Canada continued to place less importance on luxury in 2022. The 2021 regional rise of SUVs was short lived, with the elimination of the Toyota Highlander making room for the Corolla (#9) in this year’s Top 10. While the Ford F-150 maintains its first-place ranking, cars and sedans account for 50 per cent of the vehicles on the list, with no mention of any luxury vehicles.

2023 Trend Outlook

In addition to mining marketplace data for insights and trends, each year GoTrader conducts ongoing consumer research studies to provide an up-to-the minute view of the evolving automotive landscape. This year’s research explored how car shoppers are navigating the aftermath of the microchip shortage, amid inflation and cost-of-living increases.

High Gas Prices Boost Electric Vehicle Interest

Electric vehicles (EVs) have been climbing in popularity for years, with interest soaring to new heights in 2022. When gas prices skyrocketed in March, searches for EVs on GoTrader spiked too, increasing 89 per cent year-over-year. According to a study conducted among GoTrader users across Canada, 2-in-3 EV intenders said the rise in gas prices directly accelerated their desire to go green, in a bid to reduce fuel dependency. Throughout 2022, the number of car shoppers inquiring about EVs climbed up 148 per cent compared to the same time last year. Fuel cost efficiency remains the top factor for EV adoption, followed by environmental friendliness and low maintenance, with EV searches the highest in British Columbia and Ontario, likely in response to greater government incentives offered in these regions. With the EV market evolving to keep pace with demand, 2022 saw several new releases, including highly anticipated EV trucks, with the arrival of the GMC Hummer and Ford F-150 Lightning. 2023 is already shaping up to be another big year, with the anticipated Chevrolet Silverado EV and Sierra launch, an EV truck from Ram, and EV performance cars becoming a bigger trend throughout the next year.

Car Shoppers Adapt to Supply Issues

This year Canadians continued to face higher vehicle prices, less availability and longer wait times, as impacts of the microchip shortage persisted. New vehicles became an even hotter commodity, with the average time a new vehicle spent on GoTrader decreasing from 86 days in 2021 to 49 days in 2022 (a 43 per cent drop). Canadian vehicle intenders proved they were ready to come out on top, adapting to the new market norms, with 33 per cent willing to change the vehicle brand and model they were planning to buy (up from only 20 per cent in 2021), and 23 per cent willing to pay more due to the shortage.

Canadians Turn to Used Vehicles as Prices Start to Soften

Last year, the impacts of the global microchip shortage strained new vehicle supply, prompting more Canadians to consider buying used. This trend continued to grow in 2022, as research conducted on GoTrader revealed a third (36%) of Canadian vehicle intenders were willing to switch from purchasing new to used, a 10 per cent jump from 2021. With the average price of used vehicles softening, and inventory rising on AutoTrader, used vehicles continue to be an appealing option for car shoppers.

Purchase Intent Remains Steady

Despite economic uncertainty, AutoTrader’s research indicates a promising outlook for the automotive industry. The research showed that Canadians’ intentions to purchase a vehicle in the next six months actually increased to 24 per cent in October 2022, compared to March of this year (18%). Most vehicle intenders have a positive view of their personal and household finances, with only a few (15%) feeling that their situation may worsen over the next 6 months. The study revealed that car shoppers’ budgets likely won’t change even if the market does, regardless of if the economy stays the same or declines.

Methodology

Analysis was performed based on site analytics from GoTrader using Canadian search data from January 1 to October 25, 2022. Year-over-year analysis was based on data from January 2021 to October 25, 2022. gotrader.ca commissions independent third-party research to understand Canadian car shopping habits amongst both car intenders and past purchasers. Throughout the year, GoTrader also surveyed its users to maintain a pulse of car shopping behaviours over the course of 2022.

A picture is worth a thousand words – particularly when you’re using the strategy as an interest and engagement driver to aid with the sale of a vehicle. A vital aspect of well merchandised inventory is quality photos, more specifically, top-notch photography that creates a good first impression with car shoppers engaging with your inventory listings.

When photos of your inventory illustrate every aspect that a consumer would inspect and evaluate during a dealership visit, you are effectively engaging in a pre-sale of the vehicle. Remarkable photos can help speed up the process, as the sheer quality and quantity of the visuals contained within your Vehicle Detail Page (VDP) have already primed prospective buyers with a complete rundown of the vehicle’s appearance, condition, and features, enabling them to go straight to the test drive. Research shows that 75% of consumers find multiple shots of the exterior and interior to be useful when they’re viewing a vehicle1. Additionally, dealers who equip their inventory listings with 11 or more photos see significant increases to both VDP views and leads per ad, compared to inventory listings with 10 or less photos². As such, we recommend at least 11 photos but for even stronger performance up to 30 photos for each piece of inventory to ensure you’re ticking the box for effective merchandising and giving consumers every angle they need.

Shooting compelling photographs requires expertise, experience, and strong attention to detail. Whether capturing with a phone or a camera, follow the below guidelines to achieve the best results – and before you begin, be sure to clean your camera lens!

good photos samples of blue F150

Step 1: Recondition & Stage Your Vehicle

  • Curb appeal matters for car shoppers. The appropriate time investment to thoroughly recondition every vehicle ahead of a photoshoot is a necessary precondition. Ensure you have removed all personal items from the vehicle, covering storage compartments, footwells and seats. Give the seating, carpets, dashboard, centre console, steering wheel, door cards, driver controls, window glass and the trunk or pick-up bed sufficient attention. This should be accompanied by an extensive exterior cleaning, ensuring the entire vehicle is washed from front to back and top to bottom, covering all panels, wheels, tires, door, hood, and trunk jambs, and degreasing of the engine bay. What you’re aiming to achieve is as close to new of an appearance as possible – a vehicle you would be proud to display in your showroom.
  • Park the vehicle against an uncluttered backdrop, preferably in front of dealership signage or your store’s facade. Using the same backdrop for all vehicles, and positioning them the same way, provides consistency across all of your listings. Make sure to remove any items in the background, such as garbage bins or delivery vehicles, that could cause visual noise.
  • Straighten the steering wheel and set the screen to navigation, (if equipped), to a home screen or a radio station.

Step 2: Capturing the Exterior

  • Avoid standing too close to the vehicle, as this approach can result in introducing distortion to the photograph. Rather, stand well back and use the zoom feature on your phone or camera, more specifically, the optical zoom, (avoid digital zoom to make certain your photos are of the highest possible quality, when the camera allows for it).
  • Your photo set for each vehicle should include three-quarter shots from all four corners; straight-on from the front and rear; complete driver and passenger side view; a front wheel; and on a pick-up truck, the bed with the tailgate down, as well as the rear bumper and trailer hitch.

Inventory Photo with Logo
  • Logo overlays, automatically layered into photos at time of upload to your 1-SOURCE Inventory Management Console, (available with gotrader.ca Used Vehicle Listings – Complete and Superior packages), occupy the upper or lower one fifth of the frame. Consider the framing of the vehicle to provide sufficient blank space ensuring the logo won’t cover or obstruct any aspect captured across each individual photograph.
  • Having the sun behind you will limit the amount of glare in photos, however, make sure your shadow isn’t visible in photos. If necessary, stand farther back and make use of the optical zoom feature. If you can’t avoid glare from the sun, use your hand to provide sufficient shade to the camera lens.
  • The recommended aperture when using a camera is around F8 to keep the vehicle in focus. Avoid apertures larger than F6, particularly when zooming in at focal lengths longer than 100mm, to avoid any possibility of the vehicle being out of focus.
three incorrect photo samples and one correct sample
image being taken by phone with gridlines
  • Capture the vehicle from midway height, behind slightly at the knees. Don’t tower over the car and avoid shooting from a low stance. Both approaches will result in an odd and unnatural looking visual.
  • If photographing on a phone, enable the gridline feature to ensure photos are straight and centered in the fame, both vertically and horizontally.

Step 3: Quality Interior Shots

  • When possible, capture the interior of every vehicle in a lightly shaded area to avoid sun glare, even if you must move the car.
  • Positioning yourself in the middle of the backseat, photograph the entire dash and steering wheel at a focal length of 18mm or wider.
  • While standing outside of the vehicle, open the front and rear doors to their maximal extent, and capture the first- and second-row seats straight on. Be sure to include some of the doorframe to demonstrate ease of entry and exit. Consider lowering the driver and passenger side window glass to shoot the front seats directly through the window frame.
  • For a three-row vehicle, move the second-row seats forward to their entry position and photograph the rear seats, visually demonstrating the entry space.
  • When shooting the instrument cluster, close all doors and hatch to avoid warning messages. Ensure the odometer reading is displayed within the cluster. Avoid displaying the fuel consumption read-out on a configurable instrument cluster, which may erroneously show an elevated figure if the vehicle was recently fuelled and only driven a short distance.
  • Take isolated shots of the climate controls, centre console, centre screen, steering wheel, steering wheel controls, and, if applicable, all-wheel or four-wheel-drive controls.
  • Take shots of special features you intend to promote, such as seat stitching, controls for heated or ventilated seats, power-folding rear seats, controls for safety as well as driver safety assist technologies, and more.

Whether you’re selling a new or pre-owned car, it’s vital that you put your dedication and focus towards optimizing each and every one of your inventory listings. A quality listing provides car shoppers all the information they need, from their initial interaction with your Vehicle Detail Page (VDP), and acts as a catalyst to building trust, ultimately enticing a consumer visit to your showroom to find the vehicle they’re interested in purchasing – exactly as advertised.

Your online listings are often the first touchpoint between car shoppers and your dealership, when consumers are most impressionable and inclined to shortlist vehicles as well as dealers of interest. As such, it’s important you invest ample time and resources into certifying that you’re making a great first impression. To aid you in singling out the crucial aspects of this often-slighted process, we’ve compiled easy-to-follow best practice guidelines, detailing what you should keep top of mind when it comes to online merchandising. Following the aspects outlined in this guide enhance your presence on the marketplace and attract the most serious car shoppers to your inventory listings over your rivals, ultimately helping you sell more cars more profitably.

Price

When consumers are making an automotive purchase, 84% cite price as a key factor in their decision-making process.1  Thus, it’s critical to cross reference your advertised price against live market pricing data, leveraging reputable tools and software to help you price competitively. As an additional measure of fair market value for each piece of inventory listed, lean on our GoTrader iQ algorithm, as performance data shows a sizeable lift in leads per VDP for inventory with “Good” or “Great” price badges, of 31% and 60% respectively, when compared to inventory listings devoid of badging.2

  • For new car listings, if and when possible, include both the vehicle’s MSRP and your advertised price. In the car shopper’s mind, the delta between these two numbers demonstrates that you’ve listed your new car inventory at a competitive rate relative to the manufacturer’s suggested price.
  • Sense check your prices leveraging GoTrader iQ price badges, available on eligible gotrader.ca inventory listings. These pricing guidance badges are powered by a statistically backed real-time pricing algorithm. “Good” and “Great” price badges applied to your listings are indicative of a competitively priced vehicle, resulting in an increase to consumer confidence and conversion from your VDP.

Photos & Video

Before diving into the importance of compelling photos and videos, we deem it imperative to broadcast a public service announcement – always make a resolute effort to appropriately recondition your vehicles ahead of taking any photographs. This effort does not go unnoticed by serious car shoppers and demonstrates your dealership’s commitment to providing buyers with a first-class experience from start to finish.

A complete view of the vehicle’s aesthetic condition in addition to its full feature set should be “described” through your photos. The quality of your photos and videos, or lack thereof, can potentially throw a wrench in your dealership’s effort to convert online traffic into dealership visits.

An assessment of GoTrader Marketplace performance data shows that dealers who equip their inventory listings with 11 or more photos see significant increases to both VDP views and leads per ad, compared to inventory listings with 10 or less photos. More specifically, this data analysis demonstrates that used inventory listings with 11 or more photos generate 205% more VDP views and 185% more leads, while new car listings show a 211% and 167% increase to VDPs and leads respectively, relative to listings with 10 or less photos contained in the carousel.3 Thus it’s fair to recommend capturing 11 photos for each piece of inventory listed, at minimum, although we recommend up to 30, if and when possible.

Exterior shots contained within your photo carousel should detail every angle of the vehicle, providing consumers with a full 360-degree view. As 75% of consumers state that multi-angle photos of the exterior and interior are useful when viewing a vehicle2, here are the fundamentals to capture when photographing your inventory:

  • All four corners, including driver and passenger side front and rear, driver and passenger side views, in addition to head-on shots from front and rear
  • Close-ups of the hood, headlights, wheels, tire tread depth, fender and trunk badges, (if applicable), along with any other standout or unique features, for instance, touch-activated door lock handles
  • The entire dash, including close-ups of the infotainment screen, climate controls, centre stack and any features that should be highlighted, for example, Apple Car Play or Android Auto connectivity, (if available)

  • All four door cards, in full view, with optional additional shots detailing unique features such as leather inserts or arm rests, contrast stitching, power windows and/or door locks, memory seats, and more
  • All rows of seats, including driver and passenger side front, rear bench and third row, (if available), with additional visuals focused on unique features, such as premium materials and dedicated seating climate controls, (if applicable)
  • Additional visuals of the trunk, pick-up bed, or cargo compartment, engine bay, and any other unique aspect(s) of the vehicle

When it comes to advertising new cars, lean on actual photos of in stock vehicles, that fully align to the model, trim and colour detailed in the descriptive text. This way car shoppers know your dealership has the exact vehicle they are in the market for. gotrader.ca’s New Car offering includes access to a library of professionally produced photos for most new vehicles, to provide dealers with an effortless means to go live with in stock new vehicles without delay.

Finally, video content provides a seamless “virtual walkaround” of an inventory listing for consumers, effectively bridging the experience gap between online shopping and an in-person showroom visit. Our research has found that 42% of consumers consider video walkarounds of the exterior and interior of a vehicle purposeful2, so it’s a worthwhile consideration for your merchandising strategy. Automotive focused video solutions like Custom Video and Stitch Video on gotrader.ca, allow you to create and upload videos to your Marketplace listings in a cinch.

Description

Each vehicle’s description should complement the photos, joining the informative text and visuals into a cohesive package. Consider leveraging the character count associated with your descriptions as an opportunity to layer in any recognition you’ve received in the industry, or to cover the aspects that make your dealership unique, effectively framing a compelling story about your dealership operation, while building consumer confidence and trust.  Follow these fundamental steps in crafting effective descriptions of your advertised inventory:

  • As heading text is limited by a pre-defined character count, this VDP feature should be limited to contain year, make, model and trim
  • Understand the target buyer of each vehicle and ensure that your descriptive text is in complete alignment to what typically entices buyers of specific vehicle segments – note that sports coupe/sedan drivers will often skip past details surrounding safety ratings, while SUV and minivan prospects have little regard for 0-60 time
  • Describe all key vehicle features, such as premium upholstered seating, keyless entry, push button start, sunroof, enhanced infotainment, advanced connectivity, heads up display, as well as safety features, for instance lane keep assist, front collision mitigation, blind spot assist, to name a few
  • Considering use of an automated description writing tool to ensure you don’t miss an element of the vehicle and contain consistent information about your dealership across all inventory listings
  • Granted the vehicle has not been involved in a collision, capture this detail in the copy block, and consider providing access to a CARFAX Vehicle History report directly within the VDP
  • Populate the latest odometer reading, ensuring this vital detail is provided upfront
  • Outline financing options, lease rates, or other incentives, if these are available at the time of placing the listing – and be sure to keep these up to date if a vehicle remains on your forecourt once the promotional period has expired
  • Describe your unique selling proposition in a “Why Buy Here” statement to kick start the trust building journey with the most serious car shoppers
  • Include customer reviews and awards to showcase the recognition your dealership has received
  • Maintain a solid Google Review rating – dealers with reviews over 3.5 stars have their rating appear on both on the Search Results Page (SRP) and VDP

Features & Specifications

Enlighten car shoppers into the complete array of features and specifications available in each piece you have in inventory. Follow these steps to ensure this crucial aspect of the VDP is effectively leveraged across your online merchandising practices:

  • Include key callouts, such as One Owner, Accident Free, Excellent Condition, or Multi-Point Inspection in your descriptive text

Final Thoughts

Fine-tuning your online merchandising action plan to recognize and embrace each of these components of your inventory listings is a sure-fire approach to driving optimal engagement with your online audience, to build confidence, trust, and desire with consumers for each vehicle you have on your forecourt. Omitting crucial information, visuals and an asking price could well act as the Achilles heel for your dealership’s ability to attract consumers to your inventory, well before you have a chance to convert a VDP visit into an inbound lead, and ultimately, a sale. The sooner you embrace and implement an effective merchandising strategy, the faster you get your well merchandised inventory to market, the higher your chances of attracting the right buyer and dramatically increasing the return of your investment not just on Auto Trader but across your online advertising efforts.

There is no better time to step up your merchandising game!
